Confidential initial assessment
Request a free trade mark assessment
Tell us the mark, where you need protection and what your business provides. We will review the information and explain the appropriate next step and likely cost. No payment or obligation. This initial assessment is not a full clearance search.
Before you start
You only need your brand name, a short description of your business and your contact details. We can collect the full owner details if you decide to proceed.
We use your details to assess your enquiry and contact you about it.
What information helps us assess an application?
The exact mark and proposed owner are the starting points. We also need a practical description of what the business sells or provides, because protection is limited to the goods and services written in the application. Include realistic planned activities and tell us about any similar brands you already know.
If you are deciding between territories, compare the UK registration service and EU registration service. The UK and EU are separate rights; the combined package is available on the pricing page.
What happens after you submit?
- Assessment: we review the mark, ownership information, territory and likely class requirements.
- Recommendation: we explain the appropriate package, whether a search should be considered and any obvious issue requiring discussion.
- Preparation: if you instruct us, we prepare the specification and application details for approval.
- Filing: no application is filed until the scope is agreed and any required payment and authority are in place.
A free assessment is not a legal clearance opinion and does not guarantee acceptance or registration. Read the UK registration guide, the classes guide or our frequently asked questions.
Before filing: common points to check
The correct owner
The applicant should normally be the individual or legal entity that owns and controls the brand. A trading name is not always a separate legal person.
The right form of the mark
A word mark protects the wording without limiting it to a particular presentation. A logo application protects the version filed. Some businesses need one; others may justify separate applications.
Appropriate classes and searches
Too narrow a specification can leave commercial gaps, while unnecessary classes increase cost and possible conflict. A proportionate search may be sensible before investing heavily in a launch, packaging or advertising. Optional search prices and package inclusions are listed on the pricing page.
