UK trade mark fees increased on 1 April 2026

The UK Intellectual Property Office increased fees for trade marks, designs and patents on 1 April 2026. The change affects new applications, renewals and a range of procedural filings.

What changed?

The standard online fee for a UK trade mark application in one class increased from £170 to £205. The UKIPO says fees have risen by an average of about 25%, reflecting inflation and the cost of maintaining and improving its services.

An additional class attracts a separate fee, so the overall official cost still depends on the number of classes selected. This makes careful specification drafting as important as ever: an application should cover the goods and services the business genuinely needs, without paying for unnecessary scope.

Which fee applies?

Applications submitted on or after 1 April 2026 generally attract the new fee. Merely saving a draft before that date did not secure the old rate. Special transitional rules applied to certain applications filed before the change, including applications using the payment grace period and Right Start applications.

Renewal treatment depends on both the due date and the payment date. Owners should check the UKIPO guidance rather than assume that early or late payment will attract a particular rate.

Practical points

Budget using the current official fee schedule and review upcoming renewals early. If an application covers several product or service areas, obtain advice on classification before filing: classes cannot simply be added to a pending application later.

Our fixed-price packages show the applicable official fee and professional charges before you start.

  • Check the current fee rather than relying on an old quotation or saved draft.
  • Confirm the correct owner and specification before submission.
  • Plan renewals in advance, particularly where several registrations are involved.
