A new designation option
From 15 March 2026, qualifying applicants can designate Grenada in a new Madrid application. Holders of existing international registrations can also seek to extend protection there by filing a subsequent designation.
WIPO reports that the system now covers 132 countries. Grenada is the tenth country from Latin America and the Caribbean to join, improving the reach of the Madrid route for businesses with regional plans.
How examination will work
International registration does not guarantee protection in Grenada. The Grenadian office can examine a designation and issue a provisional refusal under its own law.
Grenada has adopted an 18-month time limit for notifying a refusal, with the permitted extension for refusals resulting from an opposition. It has also elected to receive an individual fee when designated and on renewal.
Should Grenada be added?
Territories should follow genuine commercial plans. Consider where goods will be sold, manufactured or licensed, whether the mark is available locally and whether the international registration’s specification properly covers the intended activity.
A targeted portfolio is often easier to maintain than designating every available territory without a business rationale.
